The Mogul Empire originated in the 1500's in Samarkand Central Asia.
It spread through what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and
a large part of India amassing as many as 150 million subjects and ruling
for over 300 years.
Jehangir was the fourth great Mogul, ruling from 1605-1627, His rule
was noted for its cultural contributions as Jehangir was interested in
'finer' things of life, from Architecture to Horticulture, and like
many of his kind he had a profound interest in food and alcohol and the
more genteel of the species.
The Tandoori style of cooking was just one of the contributions of the
Moguls.
The origanal Tandoor was a pit in the ground filled with burning timber,
which created an 'oven' of intense heat. The Moguls would spear pieces
of meat and place them in the pit to cook. Over the years the tandoor has
been refined and now provides not only a tasty meal but it is a healthy
form of cooking as well. |
